Before getting too immersed in the business of the day, I find it helps set my day to think of the simplest, purest blessings that are right in front of me, focus on them and be thankful for them. The morning drive to take my teenagers to school is a great time to reflect on the amazing splendor of the creation that is given to us to enjoy. We pass the busy garden center and numerous horse farms with long rail fences and beautiful horses grazing their breakfast as the sun rises. Beautiful trees in bloom, leaves changing colors, parents waiting for buses with their children, everyone doing life as it is given to them. Every morning it is new, amazing and there for us to enjoy, explore and make great things happen.

We want the abundant life and vibrant health, and there are endless, wonderfully-important recommendations on what, how, and when to eat and what to avoid, how and when to detoxify and which supplements to take. It’s all the very best information that should be shared with others to help them lead healthy lives, but there is something equally important to concentrate on to live in vibrant health. It shines on the inside and radiates a glow on the outside that is contagious—this is a heart of thankfulness, gratitude, grace. A heart of thanks for the blessing that is life, with all its joys, discoveries, heartaches and sorrows.

Research shows that the act of counting blessings can improve psychological, emotional and physical well-being, as those who do so have more energy, are more social, are less likely to be depressed, sleep more soundly, exercise more regularly and have greater resistance to viral infections. Gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness, and the happiest people focus on the solution rather than the problem, on the good and improving rather than dwelling on the negative. They face challenges, heartaches, fears and disappointments like everyone else, but make a conscious decision to appreciate the good in suffering, recognizing that these experiences offer them the opportunity for growth.

Being immensely thankful for small things that make life possible takes focus off of self and onto others, as we consider how we might pour out the grace we have been given in helping build up another. Verbalize gratitude to people for their presence in your life, comment to others about the beauty around you. Smile. We attract that on which we focus, so being in a state of grace and love will bring the same into your life.

To live in abundant health, actively seek an attitude of grace, in thankful appreciation for what is received, as we acknowledge all of life as a gift, and each day as a pouring out of gifts to graciously receive.
